Kyiv, Ukraine – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, expressing his gratitude for Italy’s unwavering support of Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.
During their conversation, Zelenskyy provided Meloni with an update on his recent diplomatic engagements, including a meeting earlier today with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and a prior discussion with President Donald Trump. These contacts mark some of the first high-level dialogues between Kyiv and the new U.S. administration, as Ukraine works to ensure continued Western backing in its defense efforts.
A key focus of the call was the coordination of international efforts to secure a just and lasting resolution to the war. Zelenskyy and Meloni emphasized that before entering negotiations, Ukraine, the United States, and European allies must first develop a unified strategy and action plan. This collective approach, according to Zelenskyy, will strengthen Ukraine’s position at the negotiating table and ensure that the country’s sovereignty and security remain a top priority.
The Ukrainian President also underscored the importance of security guarantees, stating that the most effective and cost-efficient solution would be Ukraine’s full membership in NATO. However, recognizing that an official invitation has yet to be extended, Zelenskyy stressed the immediate need for continued international military support. He highlighted the necessity of building a strong, modern army with enhanced air defense systems, long-range strike capabilities, and a fortified naval fleet to deter future threats.
Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and acknowledged the critical role of Western unity in countering Russian aggression. The leaders agreed to continue working closely with other international partners to reinforce Ukraine’s defense capabilities and diplomatic standing.
As the war continues into another year, Zelenskyy remains focused on securing the backing of key allies to ensure that Ukraine not only withstands Russian military pressure but also moves towards long-term security within the European and transatlantic community.
