Yazidi Woman Rescued After a Decade of Captivity in Gaza

Telavi Israel - In a remarkable operation led by the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) and coordinated with the U.S. Embassy in Israel, a 21-year-old Yazidi woman, Fawzia Amin Sido, has been freed from nearly a decade of captivity. Trafficked at the age of 11 by ISIS terrorists and held by a Hamas-affiliated militant in the Gaza Strip, Fawzia's ordeal came to an end this week, offering a rare moment of hope amid the ongoing conflict. Fawzia's tragic story began when ISIS forces abducted her during their brutal campaign against the Yazidi minority in Iraq. The terrorist group, notorious for its systemic kidnapping of Yazidi women and children, trafficked her to the Gaza Strip, where she was held in captivity by a militant with ties to both Hamas and ISIS.

Her captor was reportedly killed during the ongoing Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military campaign known as "Swords of Iron." Taking advantage of the chaos, Fawzia managed to escape and sought refuge in a hideout within Gaza. What followed was a complex, multi-nation effort to secure her freedom. COGAT, with coordination from the IDF and assistance from various international actors, including the U.S., spearheaded the rescue mission. In a secret operation, Fawzia was extracted from the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom Crossing, an access point between Gaza and Israel. She was then escorted to Jordan through the Allenby Bridge Crossing, finally making her way back to her family in Iraq.

Israeli authorities hailed the rescue as further evidence of the connections between Hamas and ISIS, pointing to the overlap in ideology and tactics between the two terror organizations. This case, they argue, is a stark reminder of the humanitarian crimes committed by Hamas in Gaza and a call to continue efforts to dismantle terror networks in the region.

The IDF emphasized its ongoing mission to strike Hamas infrastructure and liberate all hostages in Gaza. “The State of Israel remains committed to international law and will continue to promote humanitarian efforts in cooperation with global partners,” stated an IDF spokesperson. For Fawzia and her family, the rescue is the end of a long nightmare and a new beginning. But her story is also a sobering reminder of the horrors still faced by countless others in war-torn regions across the Middle East.
