Washington, DC - In a critical conversation today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. reached out to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine to reaffirm the United States' unwavering support in the face of Russian aggression. The two leaders discussed the latest developments in U.S. security assistance and strategies to bolster Ukraine’s defenses as the conflict continues.
During the call, President Biden highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance security assistance to Ukraine throughout the remainder of his term. He announced a significant $425 million security assistance package aimed at addressing Ukraine’s pressing defense needs. This package includes advanced air defense capabilities, air-to-ground munitions, armored vehicles, and other vital military supplies.
In the coming months, the United States plans to deliver a comprehensive array of additional capabilities to Ukraine, including hundreds of air defense interceptors, tactical air defense systems, artillery systems, and substantial quantities of ammunition. The package also encompasses hundreds of armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, all designed to strengthen the capabilities of Ukraine's armed forces.
President Zelenskyy provided an update on his strategic plan to secure victory over Russia, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in this ongoing struggle. The leaders agreed to instruct their teams to engage in further consultations to determine the next steps in their collaborative efforts.
A key focus of their discussions was the commitment to intensify security assistance planning alongside international partners. To facilitate this, President Biden will host a virtual leader-level meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in November 2024. This gathering will aim to coordinate additional assistance and ensure that Ukraine is adequately equipped to meet its defense objectives.
As the conflict rages on, the U.S. continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting Ukraine, reinforcing the vital partnership between the two nations in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region.
