President Biden Declares Major Disaster in Florida Following Hurricane Milton

Washington, DC - Yesterday, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared a major disaster in the State of Florida due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton, which began on October 5, 2024. This declaration enables Federal assistance to support State, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the hardest-hit areas.

    Federal aid will be available to individuals in the counties of Brevard, Charlotte, Citrus, Clay, Collier, DeSoto, Duval, Flagler, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie, Sumter, and Volusia, as well as the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. Assistance may include grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans to help cover uninsured property losses. Additionally, there are various programs in place to assist individuals and business owners in their recovery.

    Beyond individual aid, Federal funding will also be provided to State, tribal, and local governments, as well as eligible private nonprofit organizations, for emergency work in the same counties and for the Miccosukee Tribe. For the first 90 days, within a 120-day period starting from the incident's onset, Federal assistance for debris removal and protective measures will be provided at 100% of the eligible costs.

    Federal funding is also set to be available statewide on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation, helping Florida prepare for future potential disasters. John E. Brogan from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been designated to oversee and coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected regions. Ongoing damage assessments may result in further counties being included and additional forms of assistance being offered as the full extent of Hurricane Milton's impact becomes clearer. As the state begins its recovery, the President's declaration ensures critical support for those rebuilding their homes and communities.
