Mayor Bass Signs Executive Directive to Repair

 By Charles Hawes, Capital News

LOS ANGELES – In a significant move aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure, Mayor Karen Bass has signed an executive directive focused on improving Los Angeles’ streets, parks, and overall service delivery. This initiative aims to address long-standing infrastructure needs and will lay the groundwork for a comprehensive long-term investment strategy that benefits the region for generations.

Mayor Bass emphasized the importance of this directive in her statement, declaring, “This executive directive will create a path for delivering much-needed improvements to our streets, parks, and public spaces in communities throughout Los Angeles.” She outlined plans for a multi-year investment strategy that will coordinate infrastructure improvements, ensuring that Los Angeles is prepared to host major international events in the coming years, including the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.

The directive mandates the formation of a Capital Planning Steering Committee that will unify existing public right-of-way working groups to streamline project delivery, reducing both time and costs associated with infrastructure projects. Departments will be held accountable for reporting on maintenance programs and strategies to eliminate backlogs, as well as developing proposals to generate revenue for capital infrastructure needs.

Councilmember Bob Blumenfield expressed his support for the directive, stating, “A piecemeal approach to fixing LA’s infrastructure problems isn’t going to work, and I’m grateful to Mayor Bass for helping elevate the need for a holistic approach. Our constituents deserve better, and it’s beyond time for bringing all our departments together to develop long-term strategies to get our infrastructure woes on a path to recovery.”

The mayor's directive encompasses a wide array of projects, including:

  • Roadway improvements to enhance safety and reduce traffic collisions.

  • Upgrades to parks, green spaces, and recreational facilities, including senior centers.

  • Critical enhancements to bridges, stormwater management systems, and sewer infrastructure, along with projects related to the LA River.

  • Improved maintenance for trees, parkways, medians, street furniture, and lighting.

This initiative underscores Mayor Bass’ commitment to delivering world-class city services, making Los Angeles a more livable city while ensuring that Angelenos benefit from these improvements in the years leading up to the major international events and beyond
