Ukraine’s Air Defense Efforts Intensify Amid Ongoing Russian Strikes

KYIV, Ukraine – As the relentless war in Ukraine continues, the focus on fortifying the nation's air defenses remains a top priority. Ukrainian forces have worked tirelessly to bolster their air shield, combat aviation, and defensive capabilities. Yet, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized in his recent address, more needs to be done to protect Ukrainian skies from Russian aggression.

Every night and every day during this war, Ukrainians suffer from Russian strikes," President Zelenskyy stated. "Much, indeed much, has already been done to improve our defense capabilities, but not everything necessary is in place yet."

To strengthen Ukraine's air defense, the government continues to engage with international partners, seeking advanced air defense systems, comprehensive training, and timely supplies for the country’s defenders. President Zelenskyy underscored the crucial role of combat aviation in maintaining Ukraine’s air shield, particularly in countering threats from Shahed drones and missiles, including those of North Korean origin.

Our warriors shot down over fifty Shahed drones last night," Zelenskyy reported. "There were also four ballistic missiles launched from the Voronezh region in Russia. Since the beginning of this summer alone, almost 2,000 strikes have targeted our Sumy region from the Kursk region."

Despite the valiant efforts of Ukrainian forces, the toll of the ongoing conflict remains heavy. In a tragic incident, a North Korean missile struck the Kyiv region, claiming the lives of a father and his 4-year-old son. Three others were injured in the attack. Ukrainian experts have identified the missile type and pinpointed its launch site within Russian territory. My condolences to their family and loved ones," Zelenskyy said. "It is entirely fair for Ukrainians to be able to respond to this terror in the way necessary to stop it. With appropriate long-range strikes on missile launch sites in Russia, with appropriate destruction of Russian military logistics.

The President’s remarks highlight the urgent need for lifting restrictions on long-range strikes, which he believes will save thousands of lives. "Terror must always be defeated – this is the fundamental principle of protecting life."

Zelenskyy also took the opportunity to commend the tireless efforts of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. These dedicated rescuers have been at the forefront of the response to Russian strikes, working to clear rubble, extinguish fires, and provide first aid across all regions of Ukraine.

Today, I especially want to thank the rescuers of the Kyiv region: Vitaliy Kharchenko, Mykola Zolotar, Vadym Hevko, Anatoliy Rybka, Viktor Zhukovych – all of whom are working in the city of Brovary," Zelenskyy acknowledged. He extended his gratitude to rescuers across other regions, including Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Kherson, highlighting the courage and commitment of these individuals in the face of relentless danger.

As the war continues, the resolve of Ukraine’s leaders, military, and emergency responders remains unwavering. The fight for Ukraine’s skies, and the lives of its people, presses on with the full determination of a nation under siege.
