President Biden Declares Major Disaster in Kansas
By Charles Hawes, Capital News
Washington, DC - In response to the recent severe weather events, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas. This declaration, made to address the damage caused by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding from April 25 to April 30, 2024, authorizes Federal assistance to bolster state, tribal, and local recovery efforts.
Federal aid is now accessible to state, tribal, and eligible local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations. This support, provided on a cost-sharing basis, will cover emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities that sustained damage in the affected areas. The counties receiving this aid include Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Elk, Greenwood, Linn, Morris, Neosho, Pottawatomie, and Wilson. Additionally, federal funding will be available across the state for hazard mitigation measures, also on a cost-sharing basis. These measures are crucial for reducing the long-term risk to life and property from future disasters.
Andrew P. Meyer of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to lead the Federal recovery operations in the impacted regions. His role will involve coordinating the efforts to rebuild and recover from the extensive damage left by the recent natural disasters. Further assessments of the damage are ongoing, and additional designations may be made if requested by the state and justified by the results of these assessments. The federal support aims to help the communities affected by these catastrophic events to recover and rebuild stronger than before.
