U.S. Commitment to Ukraine in Munich

Munich, Germany - In a momentous speech at the Munich Security Conference, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have reiterated the United States' unwavering support for Ukraine, nearly two and a half years after Russia's brazen invasion. This reaffirmation of American commitment underscores the enduring principles of democracy, sovereignty, and international law.
I first met President Zelenskyy in February 2022, just five days before Russia launched its outrageous attempt to subjugate a free people and erase a sovereign state," Vice President Harris recounted. On that day, she addressed the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing the U.S.'s steadfast support for the principles that guide democratic nations. Harris highlighted that nations have the right to choose their own alliances and form of government, that governments must protect inalienable rights, and that the rule of law and territorial integrity must be respected. These principles, she stressed, are non-negotiable. Nearly two and a half years later, I am here to reaffirm the commitment of the United States to these principles and our unwavering support for the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal aggression," she declared. Harris's discussions with President Zelenskyy underscored the Biden administration's commitment to uphold international rules, defend democratic values, and support allies and partners. "This approach has provided for our security and prosperity for generations," she noted. "It makes America strong, keeps Americans safe, and bolsters global stability.
The Vice President condemned Russia's aggression as not just an attack on Ukraine but on global food security, energy supplies, and the very principles embodied in the U.N. Charter. She pointed out the irony of Russia's actions given its status as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. If the world fails to respond when an aggressor invades its neighbor, other aggressors will undoubtedly become emboldened," Harris warned, highlighting the potential for global chaos. She assured that President Biden and her administration would continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia. Harris shared the U.S.'s vision for a just and lasting peace, rooted in the U.N. Charter and the will of the Ukrainian people. She emphasized the importance of returning innocent children kidnapped by Russia to their homes and enhancing global food and energy security as part of the peace process.
Contrasting the U.S. stance with Putin’s recent proposal, Harris was unequivocal: "He is not calling for negotiations, he is calling for surrender." She stressed that America's support for Ukraine is not out of charity but because it is in the strategic interest of the U.S. and the global community. The Vice President highlighted the unity and solidarity among the 90 nations supporting Ukraine. Despite diverse views on global challenges, there is consensus on opposing Putin’s unprovoked war. For President Joe Biden and me, it is one of our defining missions to uphold the international rules-based order," Harris stated, calling on all nations to prioritize this mission. As the world watches, the United States stands firm with Ukraine, defending democracy, sovereignty, and international law against the tides of aggression. The message from Munich is clear: the principles of freedom and justice are worth defending, and the U.S. remains a steadfast ally in this crucial battle.
