President Biden Declares Major Disaster in Florida

Washington, DC - President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has declared a major disaster in the State of Florida, authorizing Federal aid to support State, tribal, and local recovery initiatives following the severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes that struck the region on May 10, 2024. The declaration aims to expedite the recovery process for the affected communities. The President's directive enables Federal funding for individuals in Leon County, providing crucial resources for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property damages. Additionally, various programs are available to assist both individuals and business owners in overcoming the disaster's impact.

    Federal assistance is extended to State, tribal, and eligible local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations. This support, provided on a cost-sharing basis, covers emergency work related to debris removal and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe weather. The counties included in this provision are Baker, Gadsden, Hamilton, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla. Furthermore, Federal funding will also support hazard mitigation measures across the state, aiming to reduce the risk of future disasters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has appointed Mr. John E. Brogan to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected regions. Additional designations may be made if requested by the state and justified by further damage assessments.

    Residents and business owners who have sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance through various channels. Applications can be submitted online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA App. Those utilizing relay services such as video relay service (VRS) or captioned telephone service should provide FEMA with the appropriate service number. This declaration underscores the commitment of the Federal Government to support Florida’s recovery and rebuilding efforts in the wake of these devastating storms.
