President Biden Declares Major Disaster in Mississippi

 By Charles Hawes, Capital News

Washington, D.C. – President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has officially declared a major disaster in the State of Mississippi, authorizing Federal assistance to bolster state, tribal, and local recovery efforts following severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that battered the state from April 8 to April 11, 2024. This declaration unlocks Federal funding for individuals impacted in Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Neshoba, and Scott counties. The aid includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs designed to assist individuals and business owners in their recovery from the disaster's aftermath. Additionally, Federal funding is now available on a cost-sharing basis for statewide hazard mitigation measures to reduce future risks. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has appointed Mr. Jeremy C. Slinker to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas. Further designations may be made if state officials request them and subsequent damage assessments justify additional assistance.

Residents and business owners in the designated areas who sustained losses can start applying for assistance immediately. Applications can be submitted online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or via the FEMA App. Those using relay services, such as video relay service (VRS) or captioned telephone service, should provide FEMA with the appropriate contact number for their service.
