The extension, made official under Executive Order 13851, underscores the United States' ongoing concerns about the Ortega-Murillo regime's actions, which have been deemed a significant threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy. The national emergency was originally declared by then-President Donald Trump in response to escalating violence following widespread protests in Nicaragua beginning April 18, 2018.
