American Red Cross Prepares for Hurricane Beryl
By Charles Hawes, Capital News
The American Red Cross is gearing up for the anticipated landfall of Hurricane Beryl in Texas next week, as Red Cross societies across the Caribbean rush to provide aid in the wake of Beryl’s devastation. Current projections indicate the storm will reach Texas early next week, potentially leaving thousands in need of emergency shelter. Southern Texas faces an increasing risk of strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surge this weekend, with life-threatening rip currents expected along the Gulf Coast.
Beryl's life-threatening rains and winds have severely affected the most vulnerable populations in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica, and Barbados. It is the strongest hurricane to hit Jamaica in over a decade. Today, the storm is battering Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The American Red Cross is rushing to complete preparations to aid tens of thousands of people in Hurricane Beryl's path as the storm approaches the Gulf Coast. Hundreds of trained disaster workers, truckloads of relief supplies, and numerous emergency response vehicles (ERVs) are being deployed over the holiday weekend to potential impact areas.
The Red Cross is also coordinating with local community partners and emergency responders to support evacuation centers for those needing shelter. Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and prepare for the storm. In the Caribbean, Beryl's devastating impact has created a critical need for safe shelter and basic services. Local Red Cross teams face significant challenges accessing affected areas to provide life-saving assistance. More volunteers are en route to help. Priorities include distributing relief items, restoring communication systems, and re-establishing power and telecommunication services. Hygiene kits, cleaning kits, tool kits, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, blankets, and mosquito nets have been dispatched to the hardest-hit islands to meet immediate needs. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is coordinating the response with local Red Cross societies. A combined humanitarian effort across the islands is urgently needed. The American Red Cross remains in close contact with its network partners and stands ready to assist as requested outside the U.S.
