Baltimore, MD – The Port of Baltimore is set to fully reopen, signaling a major step forward in the recovery from recent supply chain disruptions. On Thursday, the National Economic Council convened a critical meeting of the Biden-Harris Administration Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to outline federal support for the port’s complete return to normal operations. This comes on the heels of President Biden's discussions with Maryland Governor Wes Moore and leaders of the Unified Command earlier this week. The Task Force, initiated in 2021 to address immediate supply chain challenges, comprises experts from across the Administration. It leverages the federal government’s extensive resources to evaluate and mitigate supply constraints, engage key stakeholders, and develop response strategies. The Task Force has been instrumental in coordinating the federal response following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the subsequent partial closure of the Port of Baltimore. In the wake of the bridge’s collapse, the Administration collaborated closely with businesses of all sizes, ensuring a commitment to the port and its workforce despite the temporary disruption. This period saw cargo diversions to other ports, a measure taken to lessen the impact on consumers. Now, the Unified Command, including the Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Transportation, and local officials, is focused on restoring full cargo and cruise traffic at the Port of Baltimore. Notably, last weekend saw the docking of two cruise ships, and the first container ship is anticipated to arrive in early June.

The Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force is now engaging actively with various sectors to facilitate a seamless transition back to full operations. During Thursday’s meeting, federal agencies presented detailed plans to assist shippers, businesses, and ocean carriers in overcoming logistical and operational hurdles. The Department of Agriculture highlighted its coordination with food and agricultural producers, while the Department of Transportation emphasized its collaboration with port operators, truckers, and Baltimore officials to manage increased traffic. Additionally, the Department of Commerce outlined efforts to help retailers and other companies minimize disruptions and resume port operations. All involved agencies have pledged to maintain proactive engagement with stakeholders over the coming weeks to swiftly identify and resolve any bottlenecks. This collaborative approach is essential to ensuring the Port of Baltimore regains its critical role in the national supply chain network, supporting economic stability and growth. As the Port of Baltimore gears up to resume full operations, the coordinated efforts of federal, state, and local authorities underscore the importance of the port in maintaining a resilient and efficient supply chain for the nation.
